We are pleased to present Slice of Life, an exhibition including painted sculptural objects by
Damien Hoar de Galvan and paintings by Rebecca Roberts.
When we were looking for a name for this exhibition, we loved the title of a piece by Damien Hoar de
Galvan, Slice of Life, not only because it describes the way his sculptural objects and Rebecca Roberts’s
paintings are constructed, but also because they both create abstract work that references everyday life.
We always ask artists for a brief statement about their work and Hoar de Galvan sent us this clip from
Seinfeld, https://youtu.be/c9MlS1EtF7o. Though he prefers the meaning of his painted wood
constructions to be open ended, Hoar de Galvan acknowledges that they may resemble heads, figures,
architectural bits, etc. Again, he references a TV comedy, this time with a Kierkegaard quote used in
Wayne’s World “Once you label me, you negate me.”
Rebecca Roberts describes herself as a painter and a teacher. As a painter, she distills experiences and
images into bands of color varying in opacity, then weaves these together to create images that radiate
from a glowing center. As a teacher, she leads the viewer into maze-like spaces pulsing with color. Color
is in fact the lesson here. Reminiscent of color theory class, Roberts’s works teach us how three-dimen-
sional space can be achieved on a two-dimensional surface using patiently researched color relation-
ships.
