Tourists Hotel – 915 State Rd, North Adams, MA

We are very excited to be selected for the inaugural Arrival Art Fair in North Adams!
It’s a great opportunity to see art and visit three top tier museums as well as explore the beauty of the Berkshires.

Arrival is an invitational, biannual art fair situated in the Berkshires mountains of western Massachusetts, equidistant from New York City and Boston. Founded as an antidote to the frenetic pace of the art fair circuit, the inaugural edition features exhibitors from across the United States, nominated by an esteemed team of Curatorial Ambassadors. Cultural partnerships with nearby institutions – MASS MoCA, Williams College Museum of Art, The Clark Art Institute, and more – are central to the experience of Arrival.

Thank you Greg Cook for this insightful review!

‘Dance of Opposites’ At Drive-By Projects

“Dance of Opposites” is an exhibition of drawings by Meg Alexander, clay sculpture by Jody Burr, and paintings by Isaac Jaegerman at Drive-By Projects, 81 Spring St., Watertown, from April 9 to May 28, 2022. The gallery writes: “We were drawn to the ability of these three artists to embrace unexpected combinations of imagery and/or conceptual content, and to merge these seemingly disparate elements into a concordant whole. Jaegerman’s realistic landscapes pairs with geometric patterns, Alexander’s meticulously drawn birds abut fields of pure color, and Burr’s seemingly fragile porcelain forms give shape to volume and blur the boundaries of inside and out.”

The medium of clay is a tremendously malleable and expressive material. This group of talented and inventive contemporary artists bring their vision and skill to the creation of stories and worlds for viewers to interpret and reflect upon.

Our own Kathleen O’Hara is included in this exhibition. Her hand-built Pilgrim Flasks are faux relics, replicas of ancient vessels embellished with shoe impressions from a variety of shoes to honor the hopeful treks made by all peoples seeking salvation.

Sue McNally: Ascutney Revisited opened at The Fruitlands Museum June 18 – November 8, 2020

Sue McNally’s distinctive paintings shape outdoor spaces into magnetic, surreal vistas with radiant, gem-like colors. To create her series, This Land is Our Land, McNally road-tripped annually for over 25 years across the United States and painted alternately personal and iconic views of each state.

For Ascutney Revisited, McNally creates a new painting in dialogue with the painting Mount Ascutney from Claremont, NH by Albert Bierstadt (1862). She traveled to find the view that Bierstadt captured and create a painting that will be both a tribute and a course in contrasts. The new work will consider both the view as it appears much altered 150 years later, with vivid colors and forms contrasting with Bierstadt’s meticulous marks. She will also present a painting of the well-loved view from the grounds of Fruitlands Museum. In addition to the gallery exhibition, her new, large-scale, stained glass sculptures will echo the shapes of the distant mountain range outside.

Though Valentine’s day has passed, we feel the need to lengthen this year’s celebration of love. Drive-By Projects is please to present Love Match, an exhibition of work by artist pairs who are life partners. Each couple has selected works that reflect their shared professional and personal relationships.

“We have been in love for 42 years and our studio work habits/materials are significantly different. Jerry is more oriented to sculpture and Wendy to painting. Sometimes we need fresh eyes to visit our studios, which are next to one another, to point out that we are thinking about similar images but forming different perspectives. These two pieces relate to one another through referencing the body and physical interactions. Tongue to tongue, cheek to cheek.”

“Title of my painting is “the painter’s true love” and is exactly what it looks like- imaginary flowers sprouting from the palette. This is a symbol for the fact that our shared careers as painters both connect and separate us. Being able to share visual culture all the time is the source of our greatest joy and the separations are temporary even if they are frequent.”
–Wendy Edwards and Jerry Mischak

Christopher Schade and Zoe Pettijohn Schade are both concerned with how an image relates to, or is informed by the structures that contain and organize it. In the pair of works in the show, the leafy subjects pictured are shaped by, and strain against these constraints.

Joe Zane’s bold probing of essential questions that circulate around the making and presentation of art. His work employs a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, video and sculptural objects that include frequent references to the art world. Zane attempts to instill an almost comic awareness in the viewer of his or her futile attempts to locate ultimate meaning in a work of art. Julia Featheringill often sees humor in the mundane and utilizes it for her subject matter.
